The Seymour Ambulance Association was established in 1969 and incorporated as a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation in 1972 by a group of twenty-four volunteers who wanted to improve emergency medical services in the Town of Seymour. The Seymour Ambulance Association is the primary ambulance provider for the Town of Seymour. The Town’s population is between approximately 16,540 residents. In 2014 our forty-nine volunteers donated over22,000 hours of their time to the organization and the Town. In addition to our 49 volunteers, we have three full-time paid staff members, an executive director, an operations supervisor and a training coordinator, who run the day-to-day operations and coordinate all of our training. There is also a part-time bookkeeper who provides bookkeeping and administrative services for 10-12 hours per week.

Our mission is to provide and maintain a non-profit emergency medical services (EMS) system which will protect, educate and serve the residents and visitors of the Town of Seymour and surrounding towns in a consistent and professional manner, providing the highest quality emergency medical care and service to the community. Since the organization was formed in 1969, we have been doing just that. Originally the Town provided all funding for the ambulance service which included purchasing ambulances, equipment, medical supplies and providing quarters for the ambulances and crews. This placed a tremendous burden on the residents through the tax system. It also put a large responsibility on the members of the organization to conduct fund drives in order to help offset costs not covered by the Town budget. As our economy began to decline in the early 1990’s, the leadership of the organization began to bill for ambulance transportation to help shift the cost from the Town to insurance companies. They also hired a full-time chief to help run the organization. Seymour Ambulance also continued to do fundraising through an annual appeal to the residents and other small events as well as applying for numerous grants in order to purchase capital equipment. These methods served the Seymour Ambulance Association well for many years. Then, in January 2005, Seymour Ambulance Association and its leadership came under much scrutiny for allegations of mismanagement of funds. There was an extensive investigation by the Town and the State’s Attorney that lasted several years. The result of that investigation was a settlement between the parties which allowed the organization to begin the healing process. Also in 2005, the organization hired a new executive director Scott Andrews. The Town of Seymour also established an oversight board to make sure that Seymour Ambulance was being fiscally responsible. It has been a long and arduous process but we have gained back the respect and confidence of the Town and our residents. We receive letters, phone calls and face-to-face accolades on the service that we provide on a regular basis. Our members pride themselves on the quality of service that we provide to the community and the quality of the equipment that we maintain for them to use in the performance of their duties.
